Well, that escalated quickly.
Top Democrat Chuck Schumer’s sudden reversal on the GOP bill, that is.
Indeed, while Hakeem Jeffries, the current House Minority leader, has been squawking against President Donald Trump all week, Schumer has maintained a decidedly more logical stance.
Especially when accounting for the realities of a heavy Republican majority in the House, Senate, and executive branch.
Indeed, such enormous percentages make it rather clear why it’s probably not the greatest idea in the world to initiate a government shutdown when one is in the minority, especially as such a shutdown may persist for many, many months.
Apparently, more realistic Democrats such as Schumer understand that.
Even more apparently, more insane Democrats, such as the members of the ignominious “Squad” and other deeply anti-Trump Democrats, do not understand that.
Which is precisely why the Democrat Party has suddenly found itself, once again, “deeply divided” … not according to Fox News, but according to CNN.
That’s right: CNN, which at one point was so “liberal” that it could easily be referred to as the Communist News Network station, has become strangely, or at least relatively, “moderate” when describing Schumer’s admittedly pragmatic path towards cooperation with the Republicans.
And that moderation is especially evident when CNN gives top billing to Schumer’s perspective right at the start of the article.
“If we go into a shutdown, and I told my caucus this, there’s no off-ramp. The total off-ramp of a shutdown, how you stop a shutdown, is totally determined by the Republican House and Senate, and that is totally determined because they’ve shown complete blind obeisance [to] Trump, DOGE, etc. They could keep us in a shutdown for months and months and months,” Schumer declared.
Without a doubt.
And no one wants a non-functional government for “months and months,” especially when the markets are in rather obvious turmoil, never mind the ongoing geopolitical turmoil with regards to China and Russia alike.
Oh, and Hamas, the nefarious group that has surged back to public consciousness, thanks to Trump’s well-justified $400M cut to Columbia University.
Naturally, more than one liberal has been raging about Trump’s threats to “free speech” following that decision.
Only a Marxist would call cutting federal funding to institutions that let antisemitism thrive an attack on the first amendment.
That said, while Schumer may have come to this reasoned conclusion, other Democrats most certainly did not.
Among them the aforementioned Hakeem Jeffries, who has been ranting and raving against Trump for at least a week.
“We are in a perverse, bizarro land where we’re having to decide between letting Donald Trump wreck the government this way or wreck the government that way,” Jeffries roared.
Astonishingly, Jeffries even invoked Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. to justify his apparent support of a full-blown shutdown of the government.
“Dr. King once [observed] that, although everyone may not see it at the moment, the time is always right to do what’s right. This week, House Democrats did what was right. We stood up against Donald Trump. We stood up against Elon Musk. We stood up against the extreme MAGA Republicans. We can defend that vote because we stood on the side of the American people,” Jeffries brayed.
Right.
Except that the majority of “the American people” are the ones who have made a Trump presidency and Republican majority possible in the first place.
So, how exactly is radical Hakeem Jeffries “standing on the side of the American people?”
Inquiring minds want to know.
